I discovered that I like to read about 2 years ago. Weird, right? Until then, I might have owned five total books. Three were sales books and 2 were old books about Fashion. I almost feel sad confessing that about myself. Notice, I said "almost".
When a little or a lot of an author’s story is woven into a self-help book, I can usually find some real pearls of wisdom and applications in my own life. If there is some good humor and a smattering of the author's healthy emotional challenges or life-changing experiences, I will often add it to the growing list of books I share with my clients, friends and family. I enjoy being a resource for others. This phenomenon called “helper's high” - helping others releases endorphins which, in turn, improves one's mood and boosts self-esteem. Win-Win!
As a way to continue facilitating my own healing and personal growth, I made the decision in March of 2023, to write a book. With sales of self-improvement books hitting 17.1 million in 2019, I figured most people didn’t need more self-help tools or trite suggestions. So, my goal with this book is to get people to feel emotionally connected and moved in a way that encourages them to reflect on, and enhance their lives, if the feel called to do so. If my book helps a reader find their purpose as opposed to simply being a part of the global, social noise, then I will have accomplished my goal in sharing my story. I also get that some people just like a fun and juicy story and that great, too.
For me, reading a well-written, self-help, memoir has become one of life’s greatest joys. Well, that and Yoga. And my dogs. And Personal Development. And the ocean. Okay, I have quite an extensive "joy" list.
